REVIEW: Simpson Spring’s Coffee Soda
I had the opportunity to review a pretty awesome specialty Soda at the wonderful White Electric café in Providence. The newly stocked “Coffee Soda” made by Simpson Spring in nearby Eaton, MA is definitely a fitting addition to the menu of any coffee joint. The best part of all is that unlike many novelty, specialty or gimmick sodas this Coffee Soda is actually pretty good.
If you have every tasted coffee flavored hard candy such as Nips or Kona you will have a strong sense of what coffee soda tastes like. The soda is very reminiscent of the Rhode Island favorite Coffee Milk, but without the milk. Just imagine drinking more diluted Autocrat syrup with the addition carbonation! Weird, right? Fortunately, the syrup proportions in the coffee soda are just right. The flavor is palpable without being overbearing. That being said, if someone took a blind taste test they might not actually say the soda was coffee flavor. It’s spicy and different. The carbonation helps refresh and cut through what could be too strong of a flavor blast otherwise. Somehow the drink manages to refresh and even quenches thirst (or at least appear to).
The one drawback is it is pretty tough to figure out what to pair with coffee soda. A doughnut? A sandwich? I chose a chocolate cake doughnut thing, which was a poor choice because it was too sweet.
Simpson Spring has provided a solid specialty drink that is at least worth checking out to satiate your curiosity. Perhaps you’ll love it! The 10oz super old school green glass bottles are simply precious and there is nothing better than buying local soda. I can’t wait to review some of their more traditional offerings.
